Sutter's Fort, shown here on the Sacramento River, was the adobe-walled settlement John Augustus Sutter began building in 1839 to serve the emigrants crossing into California. This colored print, dated about 1866, depicts the fort as it stood in 1847, just before gold was found at Sutter's Mill upstream in 1848 and drew thousands into the region. The record ties the print to a Brannan, possibly Samuel Brannan, the San Francisco publisher who promoted the gold rush, though that attribution is unverified.
