Tejon Ranch, in Kern County, is one of the largest private landholdings in California, and this print turns to a corner of it that the caption card identifies only by name. Dated to about 1888, the photograph belongs to the decades when the Tejon, which had been a Mexican-era land grant before passing to American owners, was being worked as a commercial cattle and grain operation in the San Joaquin Valley's southern edge. The record is thin and its details come from an old caption card, so the scene itself should be read with some caution. Still, images like this are valuable for showing how large Western ranches looked and were managed in the late nineteenth century.
