Volcano, in Amador County, grew up in the Sierra foothills after the gold rush of 1848 and 1849, and this view looks down on the town from a spot called Masonic Rock. The picture is one half of a stereograph, the paired image that a stereoscope fused into a single three-dimensional scene, and it was issued as number 940 in a series called *Gems of California Scenery*. The albumen print is dated to about 1866, when mining towns like Volcano were still central to the state's economy and such views sold well to buyers in the East. Only one half of the pair is held here, so the companion image is not available for comparison.
