Monk's Rock in Strawberry Valley, Yuba County, is the subject of this albumen print, and the Library holds only one half of what was issued as a stereographic pair. The caption card identifies it as number 626 in the *Gems of California Scenery* series and gives an 1866 publication date, though the record marks that information as unverified. The valley lay along the Placerville to Lake Tahoe route, a corridor that carried miners, teamsters and travelers into the Sierra Nevada in the years after the gold rush. Stereoviews like this one sold widely in the 1860s, and when viewed through a stereoscope, the two slightly offset images merged into a single three-dimensional scene.
