Hope Valley, a meadow in Alpine County, California, is the subject of this half of a stereograph, and the Library holds only one photograph from the original pair. Its caption card gives the series title *Gems of California Scenery* and number 924, though the record notes that this information is unverified. Alpine County had been organized only a few years earlier, in 1864, and it remained a thinly settled mountain county on the eastern Sierra Nevada slope. Albumen prints like this one were widely sold in the 1860s for viewing through a stereoscope, which gave the scene its illusion of depth.
