The fort in this print is Fort Hindman, the Confederate post that guarded the Arkansas River at Arkansas Post, Arkansas, and the lithograph shows its bombardment and capture in January 1863. Union forces under Maj. Gen. John McClernand, supported by gunboats under Admiral David Dixon Porter, forced the garrison to surrender, and roughly 5,000 Confederate soldiers were taken prisoner. Currier & Ives, a New York firm that turned battle news into affordable pictures for home audiences, issued the print, and its hand coloring was applied to individual impressions. The scene is worth studying for how it pairs river gunboats with the fort's earthworks, a combination that made the action a notable naval and land victory.
