Little Round Top, the rocky, wooded hill south of the Gettysburg battlefield, is the vantage point here, and Edwin Forbes shows it at 7:30 in the evening of July 3, 1863, hours after the Confederate assault known as Pickett's Charge had failed on Cemetery Ridge. The subject headings point to the cannon that crowded the hilltop and the open fields below. Forbes, a Union artist who sketched in the field during the war, later turned his wartime studies into finished images, and this work is catalogued with the Library's Civil War drawings. Its long, quiet view over the emptied ground gives a sense of the battle's end.
