Top of the heap!" takes its name from the expression for reaching the very summit of one's field or fortunes, and the print was issued in New York around 1880 by Currier & Ives, the firm that dominated American popular lithography in the later nineteenth century. Its hand-colored or printed scenes were sold cheaply and widely, making them a common part of middle-class parlors and taverns. The image is cataloged as number 6579 in the Gale Research catalog raisonné of the firm's work, which makes it easy for researchers to compare it with the company's other prints of the period. Readers interested in the image itself will find that its appeal lay in quick, legible humor or sentiment, typical of the firm's output.
