Samuel Gompers, the cigar maker who built the American Federation of Labor into the country's largest union federation, is the subject of this c1911 portrait. The print is credited to the photographer E. Chickering, and the record notes that its dating comes from an older caption card and has not been independently verified. Gompers led the federation for most of its early history, from its founding in 1886 until his death in 1924, pressing for higher wages, shorter hours and collective bargaining rather than broad political programs. His face in a portrait of this era shows the public image of a labor leader who was both a fixture of Washington politics and a working-class figure.
