Samuel Cousins, an English engraver and Associate of the Royal Academy, made this 1849 mezzotint of William Shakespeare, who lived from 1564 to 1616. Mezzotint was a tonal method: the plate was roughened all over with a rocker tool, then scraped and burnished so light areas emerged from the dark ground. That suited it to reproducing oil paintings, and Cousins was one of the best-known practitioners of the form in nineteenth-century Britain. Prints like this one carried the playwright's likeness into middle-class homes, where a portrait of Shakespeare signaled literary taste.
