Here a husband and wife are paired in one portrait: William Douglas O'Connor, the writer and friend of Walt Whitman, and his wife, Ellen Tarr O'Connor. O'Connor is best remembered for *The Good Gray Poet* (1866), a pamphlet he wrote after the Interior Department dismissed him in 1865 for the supposed indecency of *Leaves of Grass*. The record dates the print to about 1907, nearly two decades after his death in 1889, and its identifications come from an unverified caption card. The print is cataloged within the Feinberg-Whitman Collection, a group of material tied to Whitman's circle.
