Here, the sitter is William Irwin, identified on the original caption as governor-elect of California, which places the portrait in the weeks after his September 1875 election. The likeness was made by Bradley & Rulofson, a San Francisco photography studio, and the wood engraving was published in *Harper's Weekly* on October 23, 1875. Before halftone printing became practical, national illustrated weeklies like *Harper's* turned studio photographs into engravings, so the print shows both a portrait and the way news images traveled in the 1870s. Irwin took office in early 1876, and the record's details are older catalog notes that have not been fully verified.
