May Irwin was a Canadian-born stage actress and singer who became one of the most popular performers on the American stage in the 1880s and 1890s, best known for her comic roles and for a 1896 kiss with John C. Rice that caused a stir when captured on film by Edison's company. This c1934 portrait shows her later in life, under her married name, Mrs. Kurt Eisfeldt, which points to the years after she had largely left the stage. The caption card that accompanies the record is old and its details are unverified, so the exact circumstances of the sitting remain uncertain. Still, the portrait offers a glimpse of a performer whose career spanned vaudeville, Broadway, and early motion pictures.
