The estate in this aerial view is the hilltop complex William Randolph Hearst built near San Simeon on the central California coast. Known as La Cuesta Encantada, or "the enchanted hill," it rose on a ridge above the Pacific beginning in 1919 and was designed largely by architect Julia Morgan, who worked on it for nearly three decades. A bird's-eye vantage shows how the main house, guest cottages, terraces and pools were arranged across the slope, a scale of planning that is hard to grasp from the ground.
