An aerial view of Birmingham, Alabama, dated about 1954, shows the city spread out below the camera. The print came from the Graphic Photo Service, a local Birmingham firm, and its catalog number places it among the studio's many views of the city. Birmingham was founded in 1871 and grew quickly around iron and steel, earning the nickname "Magic City," and by the 1950s its mills, rail lines and neighborhoods shaped its layout. Aerial pictures like this one show how those pieces fit together across the ground.
