Birmingham, Alabama, grew quickly from its founding in 1871 as an industrial city built around iron, steel and coal, and this aerial view captures its commercial core from above in the early 1930s. Aerial photographs of American cities became popular in this period, when airplanes made it possible to show streets, rooftops and rail lines in a single sweeping frame. The record credits Aero-graphic Corp. of Louisville, Kentucky, a firm that sold such views, and notes the date as October 11, 1934, though that date comes from an unverified caption card. The print is a useful record of how the downtown was laid out during the Depression years.
