Keijo, the Japanese-era name for Seoul, was the colonial capital of Korea from 1910 until Japan's surrender in August 1945. This aerial view is dated September 9, 1945, a few weeks after the surrender, when American forces were arriving in the south of the peninsula to take over from Japanese authorities. The record's date and caption come from a card that has not been independently verified, so the exact date and the photographer's identity remain uncertain. Even so, the view shows the city from above at a moment of transition, when the old colonial order was ending and new occupation arrangements were taking shape.
