Looking down on Cap-Haïtien, this view takes in the town's harbor and the steep hills rising close behind it. The city began in 1670 as Cap-François, founded by French settlers, and grew into one of the richest ports of colonial Saint-Domingue before the revolution that led to Haiti's independence in 1804. The catalog dates the picture to the 1930s, when Haiti was under United States occupation and aerial views were becoming a common way to map coastal towns, though it also lists a 1953 date, so the exact year is worth confirming.
