Scaffold burial and a Pony Express rider appear together in this hand-colored lithograph, the detail that sets it apart from other frontier scenes of its time. Plains peoples placed their dead on raised wooden platforms, a practice that white American observers often described with fascination, while the Pony Express carried mail across those same plains for about eighteen months, from 1860 to 1861. The sheet was issued by Bufford's Print Publishing House in Boston, a firm known for inexpensive popular lithographs, and its title, printed here as "The Persuit," shows how eastern audiences imagined the frontier during the 1860s.
