Families posed before a sod building and a windmill in this view of Coburg, Nebraska, a detail that sets it apart from the broader prairie scenes on the board. The photograph, dated 1884 or 1885, comes from the years when homesteaders were turning open grassland into farms, often building their first homes from blocks of sod cut from the earth itself. Windmills like the one shown pumped water for households and livestock on land where wells were costly to dig and streams were scarce. Its albumen print process was common in the 1880s, and the number inscribed on the negative hints at how the Library's collection was organized.
