A silver hunting knife and scabbard made by Tiffany's is the subject here, and the caption card dates it to 1884, the year Theodore Roosevelt left New York for the Dakota Territory after his wife and mother died on the same day that February. He took up cattle ranching in the Badlands, and a fine silver knife like this one suggests the care a wealthy easterner might bring to life on the frontier. The date and maker come from an old caption card and have not been independently verified.
