The Rough Riders were the 1st U.S. Volunteer Cavalry, a regiment raised for the Spanish-American War in 1898, and this print singles out their commander, Colonel Theodore Roosevelt, who later led the regiment's charge up San Juan Hill in Cuba. Roosevelt was a former New York police commissioner and assistant secretary of the Navy when he resigned to join the volunteers, and his fame from the campaign helped carry him to the governorship of New York and then the vice presidency. The record does not give a date or a maker beyond a shelflist card associated with the firm Kurz & Allison, a Chicago lithography house known for colorful popular prints, so the image is best read as a piece of wartime celebrity merchandising.
