Hermann Göring leans against the front of a Volkswagen convertible while Ferdinand Porsche looks on, in a photograph dated June 17, 1939. The album caption filed with the picture says the car was presented to Göring as a gift by Robert Ley, leader of the German Labor Front, together with Porsche, the engineer who designed it. The gift reflects the regime's promotion of the Volkswagen as an affordable "people's car" for ordinary Germans, a project tied to the Nazi leisure organization Kraft durch Freude. Because the date and attribution come from old, unverified caption cards, they should be read with that caution in mind.
