Samuel Cooper was a Boston Congregational minister, and this engraving by J. Norman shows him as a frontispiece-style portrait in the March 1784 issue of The Boston Magazine, printed by Norman & White. Cooper (1725-1783) had been one of the most prominent clergymen in the city, known for his outspoken support of colonial rights before and during the Revolution. Portraits of this kind were a common feature of late eighteenth-century American periodicals, which used engraved likenesses of notable public figures to attract readers and lend prestige to their pages. The print appears opposite page 191 of the magazine, and it is listed in Donald Cresswell's checklist of Revolutionary-era graphics at the Library of Congress.
