This etching takes its name from the peace settlement signed at Versailles on 3 September 1783, which ended the war in which the American colonies won their independence from Britain. Nicolas Ponce, a Paris engraver, made it as one plate in a series of scenes from the conflict, published with the engraver Godefroy around 1784. Its subject headings also cover campaigns, naval operations and casualties, so the plate closes a visual account that moves from battle to peace.
