Few places in old New York were as tied to the livestock trade as the Bull's Head, a tavern and cattle yard on the Bowery between Bayard and Pump streets, where Pump Street later became part of Canal Street. George Hayward's lithograph appeared in the 1867 *Valentine's Manual*, a yearly volume of city history that often reproduced older scenes of New York. The caption dates the view to 1783, but that date comes from an unverified card, so it is best read as a glimpse of the Bowery's rural edge, where drovers brought animals up the road to be sold.
