Few frontispieces of the period put a temple so plainly at the center, and this etching's title line, "Behold! a fabric now to freedom rear'd," announces its subject as a structure raised to liberty. Its record tags it with peace, temples and goddesses, a classical vocabulary that American printmakers relied on after the Revolution to describe a settled republic. The plate served as the frontispiece to *The Columbian Magazine*, a Philadelphia monthly issued in 1788, the year the Constitution was ratified. The engraver's signature, "Trenchard sculp.," links it to Trenchard, one of the firms named in the magazine's imprint.
