Dated June 27, 1864, this drawing records the day of the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain in northwest Georgia, when Union forces under William T. Sherman assaulted Confederate lines entrenched on the ridge. The work is built from pencil, white gouache, and black ink wash on gray paper, a combination that lets the artist build smoke and shadow across the scene. Its title and subjects point to Union infantry and artillery, and the bombardment that preceded the failed assault. The attack cost the Union heavy casualties and ended in defeat, so the sheet offers a view of the fighting as Union soldiers saw it from their side of the line.
