A grizzly bear standing over the words "California Republic" links this flag to the 1846 Bear Flag Revolt, when American settlers in Sonoma raised a hand-painted banner and declared independence from Mexico. This color lithograph, dated between 1900 and 1930, reflects a period when the design was gaining popularity as a symbol of state pride, and the legislature made it the official state flag in 1911. By then the grizzly was already disappearing from the state, and the last confirmed California grizzly was killed in 1922, which gives the image an added note of nostalgia.
