The second state seal of Illinois is the subject here, reproduced as a facsimile of a woodcut in the 1907 Illinois Blue Book, the state's official reference volume for its government and public business. A state seal authenticated official documents, so its design formally presented the state's identity and authority. Printing the seal in a government publication showed how such emblems reached clerks, officials and the public. The record's details come from an older caption card, so the woodcut's particulars are best checked against the Blue Book page cited.
