Few small illustrations carry as much state identity as the Seal of Maine, which appears here as a printed illustration on the verso of a title page in the Maine Register for 1890 and 1891. Maine adopted the seal when it became a state in 1820, and its design shows a pine tree, a moose, a farmer, and a seaman, with the Latin motto "Dirigo" ("I direct" or "I lead") beneath. State directories like the Register gathered officials, towns, and county details into a single annual volume, so placing the seal on the opening pages signaled official authority. The date and placement come from an older caption card and are not fully verified, but the seal's design is well documented.
