This aquatint records a Pawnee council during Stephen Long's expedition to the Rocky Mountains in 1819 and 1820. Samuel Seymour, the expedition's artist, drew the scene, and I. Clark engraved it for Edwin James's *Account of an Expedition from Pittsburgh to the Rocky Mountains*, published in Philadelphia in 1822 and 1823. The aquatint's tonal wash gives the gathering a soft, painterly quality. Such images were made by outside observers, so they reflect the assumptions of their makers as much as the scene itself.
