Sir Henry Clinton, who commanded British forces in North America from 1778 until 1782, is the subject of this engraved portrait. London publisher J. Fielding issued it in May 1786, and it appeared opposite page 150 of the third volume of John Andrews' *History of the War with America, France, Spain, and Holland*. Clinton captured Charleston in 1780 but left Lord Cornwallis in command of the field campaign, and Cornwallis's surrender at Yorktown in 1781 became the war's decisive defeat for Britain. Historians still debate how much of that outcome should be laid at Clinton's door.
