Printed as a halftone for the June 1896 issue of the *Monthly Illustrator and Home and Country*, this portrait of sculptor Charles Henry Niehaus (1855-1935) appeared on page 391 of volume 12. Niehaus, born in Cincinnati, became known for portrait busts and public monuments, and a magazine feature like this one helped bring an artist's likeness before a general readership. Halftone reproduction, which let photographs appear alongside text on ordinary printing presses, was then becoming the standard for illustrated magazines. The record for this print is limited, so the details of the photographer and the sitting are not documented here.
