Qualifying for a Campaign" turns its satire on how British officers were readied for the war in North America, a subject London print shops treated with open mockery. Dated June 4, 1777, and published by R. Sayer and J. Bennett, this hand-colored etching is credited to a delineator named Verney and belongs to a series of commentary cartoons that poked at the army's fitness. The timing matters: that same summer, John Burgoyne led a British force south from Canada toward Albany, so the joke about who was fit to take the field would have landed with readers following the war's progress.
