Few images show a Civil War regimental standard as directly as this one, which reproduces a painting of the banner of the 22nd Regiment, U.S. Colored Troops. The painter, David Bustill Bowser, was a Black artist from Philadelphia who made many of the flags carried by Union regiments raised from African American men. The Latin motto "Sic semper tyrannis," long associated with Virginia, gives the banner a pointed political message in a war fought over slavery and the Union. Because the image is a carte de visite, a small, inexpensive card photograph, it shows how a regiment's identity could circulate widely among soldiers, families and supporters.
