The print's record names the Earl of Bute, the former prime minister whom many colonists and British critics blamed for shaping royal policy after he left office in 1763. It appeared on April 1, 1775, just weeks before the battles of Lexington and Concord, and it satirizes the British argument that Parliament represented the American colonies through "virtual representation," even though colonists could not vote for its members. The subjects listed in its record point to the 1774 measures that angered the colonies: the Quebec Act, which expanded Canadian territory, and the punishment imposed on Boston after the Tea Party. Prints like this one were a major way that British and colonial audiences argued over those policies.
