Lewis Cass appears here as the Democratic nominee for president, and the lithograph is one of the campaign portraits that New York printmaker Nathaniel Currier issued from his Nassau Street shop around 1848. The hand-applied watercolor was a common finish on Currier's inexpensive prints, which were sold to a mass market of voters. Cass, a former governor of Michigan Territory, U.S. senator, and Andrew Jackson's secretary of war, lost the 1848 election to the Whig candidate, Zachary Taylor. The print was deposited for copyright in August 1848, which fixes it within that campaign season.
