Its title frames the Democratic Party as a funeral in this Philadelphia lithograph from 1848. Peter E. Abel published it with the draftsman E.F. Durang, who probably drew it, at a time when the party was divided over whether slavery should spread into new western territories. The subject list names party figures including Thomas Hart Benton, John C. Calhoun, Lewis Cass, Sam Houston and James K. Polk, a roll call of Democrats who were often at odds. Political cartoons like this one were a popular way for 1840s readers to follow such feuds.
