Few prints from 1846 treat the tariff debate as bluntly as this one, which casts free trade as a corpse and names a roster of prominent Democrats around it, including President James K. Polk, Vice President George M. Dallas, and South Carolina's John C. Calhoun. The occasion was the Walker Tariff, which lowered duties on imported goods and passed that summer, with Dallas casting the tie-breaking vote in the Senate. The artist, Edward Williams Clay, a Philadelphia caricaturist who signed with a monogram, was writing from the protectionist side, which saw the bill as a blow to American manufacturers.
