Sergeant John Champe, a Virginia-born soldier in Henry "Light-Horse Harry" Lee's dragoons, is the figure at the center of this scene. In 1780 Champe volunteered to desert to the British in New York, with the aim of seizing Benedict Arnold, the American officer who had turned traitor. The abduction plan fell through, and Champe had to escape his pursuers and make his way back to American lines. Currier & Ives issued the print around 1876, the centennial decade, when many of its lithographs revisited Revolutionary episodes as tales of patriotic daring for a popular audience.
