Few single sheets attempt what this one does: a row of portrait likenesses meant to cover every pope from Saint Peter down to Pius IX, whose reign ran from 1846 until his death in 1878. The date of about 1878 places the print near the end of that long pontificate, by which time the papacy had lost its temporal rule over central Italy when Rome passed to the new Kingdom of Italy in 1870. Sheets like this presented the papal succession as one unbroken line of office-holders and were popular in the nineteenth century as devotional and educational images.
