The title, *Re-union on the Secesh-Democratic plan*, names the target: a reunion of the states that would leave secession's gains, and slavery, intact. "Secesh" was a common slur for Confederate sympathizers, and the print mocks Northern Democrats who pushed for a negotiated peace in 1862, when Union fortunes were uneven and Lincoln had not yet issued his Emancipation Proclamation. Currier & Ives, a New York firm that sold inexpensive lithographs to a broad public, deposited the print for copyright on October 17, 1862, weeks before the midterm elections. Viewers should read it as partisan commentary rather than neutral reporting.
