This plan shows the ground floor of an "Oriental Villa," labeled Design I and Fig. 21, from Samuel Sloan's *Sloan's Homestead Architecture*, published in Philadelphia by J.B. Lippincott & Co. in 1861. Sloan was a Philadelphia architect whose pattern books offered middle-class Americans ready-made designs for country houses and villas. The "Oriental" label reflects the mid-century fashion for exotic, Moorish-inspired and Eastern-flavored architecture, which was often applied to picturesque suburban homes. The plate was engraved by F.J. Pilliner, and its floor layout shows how such fashionable exteriors were arranged inside.
