A Kootenai hunter sits in a canoe among reeds on a lake in this c1910 photograph, showing how waterfowl hunters used the marsh cover to get within range of their quarry. Edward S. Curtis made the image as part of his long effort to document Native peoples of North America, and it appeared as plate 249 in the supplementary seventh volume of *The North American Indian*, published between 1907 and 1930. The Kootenai lived in the Columbia and Kootenay river country that today spans British Columbia, Idaho and Montana, where lakes and wetlands provided food and materials, so the picture captures a subsistence practice tied closely to that landscape.
