A hunter who cannot find his quarry is the joke in this 1872 puzzle picture, which invites viewers to search a busy outdoor scene for figures concealed among trees, rocks and foliage. Currier & Ives, the New York firm that issued inexpensive colored lithographs in large numbers, produced many riddle prints like this one in the 1870s, when hidden-figure amusements were popular in homes and magazines. Sporting and rural subjects were among the firm's most reliable sellers, and the sheet's catalog entry in a published Currier & Ives reference shows how widely the company's output has been documented.
