In this c1908 photograph, a Mandan bather is shown at the water's edge, one of the nude studies Edward S. Curtis made among the Mandan of North Dakota. Curtis included it in volume 5 of *The North American Indian*, where it appears on page 12. The Mandan had lived along the upper Missouri River for generations, but by this time they were on much-reduced land after decades of disruption. Curtis's posed scenes of Native life drew both admiration and criticism, and the print is worth viewing with its original book context in mind.
