At the docks in Valparaiso, sacks of beans are being loaded onto lighters, the flat-bottomed barges that carried cargo between ships anchored offshore and the shore. Valparaiso was among the busiest ports on South America's Pacific coast in the early twentieth century, and its harbor handled a steady flow of goods bound for markets around the world. The stereograph was issued by the Keystone View Company, an American firm that mass-produced stereo cards so armchair viewers could see distant places in three dimensions. The caption index also files the scene under coffee, a reminder of the trade that passed through the port.
