Kichi Saburo Nomura, a Japanese naval officer who later became a diplomat, is the subject of this 1929 portrait. He served as Japan's ambassador to the United States in 1941, when he joined the final talks with Washington that failed to prevent the attack on Pearl Harbor. The print is credited to Underwood & Underwood, a New York firm that supplied portraits and news photographs to American newspapers and magazines in the early twentieth century. The late 1920s were a period of active naval diplomacy between Japan, Britain and the United States, which makes the picture a useful glimpse of a figure who would later be central to a far more fraught moment.
