The engraving depicts the execution of prisoners from the Texan expedition that crossed into Mexico in 1842 and ended in surrender near Mier. According to the accounts that circulated afterward, Mexican authorities had the captured men draw beans from a jar, and those who drew the black beans, roughly one in ten of the group, were shot. The picture appeared as an illustration in Charles McLaughlin's *Journal of the Texan Expedition against Mier*, published in 1845, and it shows how American readers were given a dramatic and sharply partisan version of the episode.
